14 signs you’re with a good man

It is not easy to tell why it happens; sometimes we seem to stick around with a partner whose behaviour towards us is less than we deserve. Perhaps people are no longer certain what a healthy relationship should be like. In case you're wondering about your own man, here's a quick checklist to find out whether he is a keeper.

1. A good man will ensure you 'feel' how much he loves you
Do you feel cherished? If your man truly loves you, you will know it and feel it, and you will not be wondering all the time whether he cares. A good man will always remind you how much you mean to him, and not just by uttering the three words to keep you satisfied; you will feel it in the way he treats you.

2. A good man will always make you feel good about yourself
The way he looks at you, touches you and treats you reflects his perception of you as well as affecting how you feel about yourself. Someone who puts you down, criticises you and blames you eventually erodes your self confidence until there is none left; this is a form of manipulation or emotional abuse. A man who loves and respects you makes you feel bright and beautiful, within and without, whether when you are in your sweatpants or in an evening dress.

3. A good man does the little things
Regardless of how small certain things may seem, he will understand that they are really the ones that matter most. If someone cannot be bothered to help you out with small things, it means he is not willing to dedicate any time and effort to your service when you need it. If you can rely on him for the little things, you feel safer to rely on him for the bigger things.

4. A good man understands that actions speak louder than words
And this does not only apply to the three little words. Is he a man of his word? People who make empty promises do not deserve your respect, and a good man will be one who fulfills each one without fail.

5. A good man will gain your trust
Without trust, there is no foundation for love or respect and a good man is aware of that. A man who is suspicious, jealous or untrustworthy will breed doubts and negative emotions that may fester and break any intimacy you have developed. A good man will earn and keep your trust so that you feel comfortable and confident in your relationship.

6. A good man embraces honesty
A good man will understand that honesty is always the best policy; he will be honest with you and will make you feel comfortable being honest with him. The greatest intimacy comes from the ability to be authentic and transparent with your partner knowing you will never be judged; this means being able to be the most genuine, uncensored version of yourself around him without fear of him reacting badly if you share something with him.

7. A good man will open up to you
For some people it can be difficult to express themselves, particularly when it comes to emotions, fears and dreams, but bottling up emotions and keeping secrets will cause tension and frustration. A good man will not keep things from you, while being able to discern what you need to know and what can be kept private.

8. A good man will make you feel safe
This can be on any and every level: physically safe, financially safe, emotionally safe... all kinds of safety make for a sense of security that beats a sense of threat any day. If someone makes you feel uncomfortably vulnerable or has you treading on eggshells, there is a problem; a good man will make you feel secure and protected no matter what the situation.

9. A good man never disrespects you
It is natural to have disagreements and even arguments in a relationship from time to time. If someone make things personal, digs up the past or becomes insulting and abusive, minor battles can turn into major wars. A good man will remain calm and focus on the topic at hand and will always treat you with respect even if he disagrees with you.

10. A good man is never abusive
Abuse can take various forms, and the subtler mental and emotional abuse can sometimes be more damaging than physical abuse because it is easier to overlook, allowing it to slowly destroy the abused. A good man will never even think about being abusive towards you or cause you harm in any way. The sad reality is that it will not get better on its own, so if it happens to you, please respect yourself and have the courage to talk to someone or walk away immediately.

11. A good man is always aiming to better himself
Whether he is learning new things, developing a new skill, reading a new book or watching a documentary, a good man who prides himself on continuous self improvement will always be intellectually challenging you and keeping your attention. He will be doing these things for himself, but the added benefit will be the positive impact it has on your relationship.

12. A good man will inspire you
A good man's drive and ambition will rub off on you as he pursues his own passions; his own inspiration will inspire you and encourage you to live life the way you want and be who you want to be.

13. A good man always supports you
A good man will always support you in whatever you choose to do in your life; he will never discourage you or make you feel as though you can't do what you set out to do. He will be beside you every step of the way, urging you on, cheering your victories and comforting you when you do not succeed.

14. A good man will stand by you
Any man can be by your side on the sunny days; the real test of character is whether or not he will hold out during stormy weather. Challenges and unexpected situations may arise, but a good man will stay by your side through it all. This does not mean you can behave badly and expect him to stick around; the point is both of you having the integrity to not walk away when times get hard.

If you are with such a man, he is a jewel; make sure you let him know how much you appreciate him!
